Central Alexandria Traffic Study
In response to resident concerns about increased traffic and traffic diversion to neighborhoods in central Alexandria, City Council has directed to staff to conduct a comprehensive traffic study, which will examine traffic volumes, speeds, and traffic origins and destinations. The traffic study will specifically focus on Seminary Hill, Seminary Ridge, Clover College Park, and Taylor Run Civic Associations' areas.

The City is working with the community to consider pilot projects along Duke Street to evaluate how signal timing changes might reduce cut-through traffic in neighborhoods by keeping traffic on main arterials and reducing congestion on Duke Street. Progress on Recommendation : The City has made substantial progress on the recommendations from the task force and completed nearly all of the short term recommendations. See the Progress Report here.
Task Force
Residents from four neighborhoods in Central Alexandria were represented on a task force that met between 2016 and 2018 to discuss strategies to mitigate increased traffic, speeding and safety concerns in their neighborhood. In May 2018, the City Manager released a memo to City Council outlining the short- and long-term recommendations of the Central Alexandria Traffic Study. The recommendations are based on feedback from the Task Force. The short-term recommendations included afternoon turn restrictions on certain streets, traffic calming measures and pedestrian safety upgrades. The proposed turn restrictions were presented to and approved by the Traffic and Parking Board at a public hearing on May 21, 2018.
The long-term recommendations included initiating a Complete Streets redesign of the intersection at Duke Street and West Taylor Run Parkway. The recommendations also included advancing several projects that have been recommended in the study area through previous planning efforts and longer-term policy recommendations for Council consideration.

- Community meeting to share information about the progress made on recommendations that came from the Central Alexandria Traffic Study. Staff from the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services discussed the evaluation of pilot turn restrictions, confirmed comments and sought additional input for the Duke Street and West Taylor Run Intersection Project.
