Specialty Tours: Mind Your Manners
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is famous in part because George Washington celebrated his Birthnight Ball there, but there’s so much more to the story! From scandal to social class, balls reveal the political intrigue and power structures that were part of early America. Learn more through this specialty tour.

Washington’s Birthnight: Chronicles & Cuisine
This year, Historic Alexandria is excited to offer a twist to the traditional Birthnight Ball program using elements of past events coupled with exciting new research to create a special four-course curated dinner. The menu will tell the story of America, spanning from the enslaved to the wealthy, and how the Birthnight Ball helped build the legacy of George Washington for generations of Americans.
Course 1: Savory Hoecake & Lamb Lollipop
Course 2: Cheese & Bacon Potato Soup
Course 3: Duck with Roasted Brussel Sprouts & Parsnip Mash with Sally Lunn Bread
Course 4: Cherry Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream
- Saturday February 18, 6 - 9 p.m.
- Dress: Business Attire.
- Tickets are $125 each. Cost includes soft drinks, coffee, tea + two drinks of either wine or beer. Vegetarian upon request.
History of the Birthnight Ball
As George Washington’s hometown, Alexandria hosted numerous events for the General but none as famous as the Birthnight Ball. A Birthnight Ball honoring George Washington was first held at the tavern now known as Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in the 1790s.
