Sheriff's Office Involved in Youth Outreach with ACPS, NOBLE
The Sheriff’s Office has been active in community events and programs at schools to benefit children and teens. On March 11, Sheriff Sean Casey and Captain Shahram Fard visited Douglas MacArthur students for Career Day. Sheriff Casey spoke with kids and answered questions about the work that deputies do, and then they let kids explore a cruiser and try out protective equipment.
During Essential Workers Appreciation Week, March 13 through 20, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) recognized ASO and other public safety staff who not only help keep students and schools safe but work to support them in other ways. For example, during the pandemic, deputies delivered meals to children at their homes and later provided security and directed traffic when families picked up meals and supplies at schools. On March 14, Sheriff Casey and several deputies attended a special program and received thoughtful thank you notes from the students, as ASO employees who tutor Cora Kelly students did later that week.
Most recently Sheriff Casey, Chief Deputy Shelbert Williams and Deputy Antonio Greene participated in “The Law and Your Community,” an educational program from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). They joined Alexandria and Fairfax County police on March 23 at Charles Houston Recreation Center where NOBLE provided training to young people on interacting with law enforcement, understanding laws and improving communication. This type of program is beneficial to law enforcement as well as we welcome questions from teens and their parents, appreciate learning from their perspective, and strengthen our relationship with our neighbors.
This spring, deputies will join their public safety partners and others at community cookouts throughout the City so be sure to say hello if you see them!
